Reusable & Renewable Resources

Today there is a push toward conserving resources, replenishing resources and using clean energy sources. There are many different renewable resources that are used every day. Many of these resources are necessary not just for human survival, but for the survival of the planet. Clean energy sources, water, timber and biofuels are all considered renewable resources.
  1. Clean Energy

    • Clean energy typically refers to solar, wind, tidal and geothermal energy. These energy sources occur naturally and do not leave damaging effects on the environment. Solar energy uses sunlight and is usually captured through solar panels on buildings. Wind energy is harnessed through wind turbines and turned into electricity. Tidal energy is not widely used, but it uses energy from the ebb and flow of the tides. Geothermal energy is made from heat pockets under the earth that vent to the earth's surface.

    Water

    • Water is a naturally renewing resource. It covers more than 70 percent of the earth's surface. Water can be obtained through groundwater, springs, rivers, lakes and practically any water source. The environment renews its own water supply through evaporation and precipitation. Saltwater can be used as drinking water if it is distilled to remove the salt.

    Timber

    • Timber is considered renewable because more trees can be planted and grown. TImber is used in housing, decorations and general construction. Trees can also repopulate by themselves by dropping seedlings during the year. These seedlings can be in many different forms such as acorns and pine cones.

    Biofuels

    • Biofuels are fuels made from renewable resources such as ethanol and biodiesel. These fuels can be made out of corn or sugar, among other plants. Ethanol is already being used as an addition to gasoline, and scientists are looking for a way to replace diesel with biodiesel. These fuels are considered renewable since the source of these fuels can be regrown as needed and in large quantities.
