Water
Frog's eggs are laid in shallow fresh water. Tadpoles have gills and only survive under water. During the metamorphosis stage they will develop lungs in order to breathe out of the water. Where the tadpoles live in the water differs from each species. For example, tree frog tadpoles live near the surface. Ground-dwelling frogs live at the bottom of water.
Food
As soon as a tadpole hatches it has an herbivorous diet. It gets nutrients from eating plants and decaying animal matter. Once the tadpole has developed legs it will become carnivorous, eating small insects and water-dwelling animals. Some tadpoles with eat the eggs of other frogs and even smaller tadpoles if there is a short supply of food. A tadpole will eat its own tail as it develops. If you have tadpoles as pets, you can feed them small pieces of liver.
Predators
In wild tadpole habitats there are many predators. Some predators will eat frog eggs before they have hatched. These include ducks, fish and insects. Other predators include spiders, pond snails, dragonflies, birds, snakes and crayfish. They type of predator depends on where they live.
Types of Habitats
Since tadpoles only survive in water, they are found in natural water sources. These include the dies of ponds, lakes, creeks and streams. These are areas with a variety of food sources and are rich in nutrients. The water is greenish to brown, which provides camouflage from predators.
