How to Make a Safety Lanyard

Safety lanyards are typically used for activities such as climbing trees and other objects. They may be used to assist in climbing objects for the sake of competition or to make repairs to power lines. There are two different types of safety lanyards. One type is used solely to attach equipment to the individual who is climbing. The other type is the fall-arrest lanyard, which prevents a person from falling from the object they are climbing. Both types of lanyards are constructed in the same manner.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the rope and cut it to the desired length. The most common length for a fall-arrest lanyard is around 12 feet. The equipment lanyard should be half that length.

    • 2

Use a match or a lighter to burn the ends of the rope; this will prevent the ends from fraying.

    • 3

Take the steel snap hook and tie one end of the rope to the rope eye. There are a number of different knots you can tie, but a double bowline knot is effective for a safety lanyard. Refer to the Resources section if you need to learn how to tie this knot.

Take the other end of the rope and tie it to the steel locking carabiner. Tie a double bowline knot to secure the rope safely and properly.
