What Resources Are Needed in Going Green?

Going green is easy when you make a few simple lifestyle changes. Although change can be difficult for some people, the environmental rewards will be immense. You can feel good about doing what is right and healthy for the planet. Most people have the community resources needed to go green readily accessible, so it's not difficult to make necessary adjustments.
  1. Recycling

    • Recycling is an important step to take if you are joining the green movement. Most communities offer some form of recycling pick-up. In some places you have to sort your aluminum, glass and paper; in others, everything is dumped into the truck and separated at a processing center. For larger items, such as electronics, find a center or event that specializes in this type of recycling. If you have old furniture you no longer want, contact a charity, such as the Salvation Army. Some charities will come to your home and pick up used furniture that's being donated.

    Alternative Transportation

    • Hang up the car keys and take public transportation to work. Try carpooling if public transportation will not get you to where you need to go. If you live close enough to your place of employment, try walking or riding a bike. Try using alternative forms of transportation as much as possible to reduce your use of fossil fuels.

    Food and Dining

    • Purchase your produce from local farmers' markets. The fossil fuels used to transport food across the country is greatly reduced when you buy local. If your community does not have a farmers' market, look for the local shelf tags at the grocery store. Factory farmed meat has detrimental effects on the environment, so purchase meat from local and organic farms that are dedicated to sustainability.

    Water

    • Be smart about your water consumption. Take shorter showers and install a low-flow shower head. Use cold water when possible to avoid using the energy needed to heat the water. Drink water from the tap if it is safe, or get a reusable filter for it. The fossil fuels used to produce and transport plastic water bottles is immense, and many of these bottles end up in landfills. Drinking tap water will greatly reduce your personal impact on the environment.
