How to Make a Bow & Arrow From Natural Resources

Making a bow and arrow from natural resources can be an unforgettable memory for children. Perfect for family camping trips and hikes, this activity teaches children to be resourceful and creative. Your bow won't have the precision and force of a purchased bow, but you'll definitely be able to shoot an arrow.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a firm but pliable green stick at least 3 feet long. Use a sharp stone to carve a V-shaped notch into each end of the stick.

    • 2

Find a sturdy vine several inches less than twice as long as the stick. If your stick is 3 feet, for example, use about 5 feet of vine. Tie both ends of the vine together so you have a loop. Place the loop of the vine in the notch on one end of the stick. Stretch the vine toward the other end of the stick and bend the stick until you can place the vine in the second notch. The vine will be taut, and the stick will remain bent, completing the bow.

    • 3

Find a sharp stone or piece of wood shaped like an arrowhead or triangle. Locate a stick that is at least 1 foot and no more than 2 feet long. Attach the natural arrowhead to the stick, either tying them together with a piece of vine, or wedging the arrowhead into the tip of the stick. Use this arrow with your natural bow.
