Native Plants From the Cote d'Ivoire

Located on the western coast of Africa, the country of Cote d'Ivoire depends upon a thriving agricultural sector that employs over half of the republic's workforce and accounts for a significant percentage of the country's exports. Among the major crops produced are coffee, timber, cocoa and bananas, though these are not native species. Cote d'Ivoire boasts a number of plants and trees that are endemic to the region, though most of these are currently considered extinct or endangered.
  1. Gymnostemon zaizou

    • The Gymnostemon zaizou is a semi-deciduous tree found primarily between Cote d'Ivoire's Cavally and Sassandra Rivers. Harvested commercial hardwood is often used to make percussion instruments. The Gymnostemon zaizou is listed as a vulnerable species, and has been negatively impacted by logging and development throughout the country.

    Cassia mannii

    • A medicinal species of the Cassia plant that grows abundantly throughout the continent of Africa, Cassia mannii is found in Cote d'Ivoire, Gabon, Sudan and Uganda. The plant's bark may be infused into a beverage used to treat bronchial problems, and can also be used for tanning hides. The seeds of Cassia mannii are crushed and utilized to treat neuralgia and are applied to skin scarifications.

    Okoubaka aubrevillei

    • An endangered plant native to coastal Western Africa, the Okoubaka aubrevillei is used in religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes. Okoubaka aubrevillei is infused into topical solutions which are utilized to treat skin problems resulting from leprosy and syphilis, as well as to counter the effects of external poisoning. Extracts from the bark of the Okoubaka aubrevillei are ingested by individuals around the world as remedies for poisoning, lethargy, depression and allergies. The Okoubaka aubreviilei is commemorated on a stamp issued by the Universal Postal Union.

    Dorstenia astyanactis

    • Discovered in Cote d'Ivoire, Dorstenia astyanactis is considered nearly extinct due to heavy deforestation throughout the country. The plant grows on tree trunks or branches, extending roots to the forest floor.

    Dracaena scabra

    • Native to Cote d'Ivoire, Dracaena scabra is related to the plant families known as Dragon Trees and Mother-in-Law's Tongues. The Dracaena scabra is a rainforest dwelling shrub distinguished by long, triangle-shaped leaves with sharp, pointed ends.
