Extraction of Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera gel is often used as a topical skin treatment for sunburns and other irritation. It provides a soothing and cooling effect to relieve pain and itchiness. This substance stems from the aloe plant, which is related to -- and similar in appearance to -- the cactus family. Aloe plants can be purchased at many nurseries and kept in the home.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a leaf from the aloe plant with a knife.

    • 2

Hold the leaf with the cut end facing downward, so the resin in the leaf drains.

    • 3

Remove the top layer of skin from the length of the leaf. Run a knife along the top surface of the leaf and just under the surface of the skin. Separate the skin from the body of the leaf with the knife.

    • 4

Remove the gel from the leaf. Run the back of the knife over the skinless surface of the leaf. The gel will be squeezed from the leaf and ready for use.
