Animals That Eat Algae

Algae are complex-celled photosynthetic organisms. There are many different types and they come in many different colors, including blue, red and green. Like land plants, most algae are stationary, lacking locomotive abilities. Algae are found in bodies of water and form the primary diet for a lot of animals, including frogs, salamanders, crayfish, snails and water bears.
  1. Green Sea Turtles

    • Green sea turtles are very large reptiles that can weigh about 700 lbs. and grow to be about 5 feet in diameter. They have been seen as far north as Alaska and as far south as Australia. Adult green sea turtles live on a diet that is exclusively algae and grass. Young turtles also dine on jellyfish and crabs, but as they age, they forgo the invertebrate part of their diet and focus almost completely on algae.

    Mayflies

    • Mayflies are aquatic insects. There are about 2,500 species of the mayfly, and their larvae stage lasts about one year in freshwater. Mayflies eat only during this larvae stage because by the time they reach adulthood their mouth parts and digestive systems have almost completely disappeared. A larvae mayfly eats only living and dead algae. It uses its mouth parts to strain out bits of algae from the incoming water and to scrape it off logs and rocks.

    Pickerel Frogs

    • Pickerel frogs are small frogs that are native to most of the eastern United States and Canada. They can be found in marshy areas near streams. The frogs have a varied diet that includes ants, beetles, spiders, plants and insect larvae. But pickerel tadpoles eat algae as their primary source of food. The tadpoles are too small to eat the same diet as adult frogs and so they live on algae and plants.

    Twig Catfish

    • Twig catfish are a type of fish that originated in Colombia and Venezuela. They grow to be around 6 inches long and are known for their camouflage abilities in aquariums, often sitting motionless on branches and going unnoticed. Twig catfish eat a vegetarian diet based on common green algae and brown algae. They constantly graze on this algae, using their mouth to suck it off every inch of glass, plants, leaves and other objects in the aquarium.
