Activities With Canyons & Caverns

Canyons and caverns are the byproduct of mother nature's awesome power. Millions of years of wind, rain and flowing water cutting away at rock along with some assistance of tectonic plate activity are what form these natural phenomena. People always have been fascinated with the exploration of these natural formations, and activities abound for the adventurous in and around them.
  1. Canyon Hike

    • Take it slow by walking around or even down into the canyon. Stick to premade and marked trails for safety purposes. Be sure to bring a camera with you to get great pictures; memories are great, but they're much better when you can share the beauty with someone else. You can even join a hiking tour to learn more about the canyon's formation, the wildlife and the history of the area and how the canyon is significant.

    Canyon Cycling

    • If you're into thrills, then canyon cycling can be a good choice for you. Downhill is dangerous and will provide the thrill you're looking for, but you can also rely on uphill being a nice physical challenge. Check with park rangers in the canyon to be sure this is safe; there may be designated trails for bikes so there are no accidental collisions with hikers.

    Spelunking

    • Spelunking is the act of exploring caves and enjoying their natural beauty. Be sure to check with park rangers as to any safety precautions you should heed during your underground adventure. If the cave is uncharted or not part of a national or state park, then it would not be wise to explore it if you are not a professional. There are plenty of things to look for including stalactites, stalagmites and fossils.

    Cavern Tours

    • Cavern tours can help you understand how the cavern was formed. You can also find out the history of how it was discovered and if it played any significant role in the surrounding area. There might be creatures that still inhabit it that the tour guide can point out. They'll have all the information concerning how each formation was created, how old the structures are and where to find all the hidden things that most people would miss without a guide.
