Going Alone
If you are feeling adventurous, you can go to Stoney Creek Metropark and rent snowshoes to attack the trails on your own. The park offers snowshoe rentals at $5 per person and they are available at the nature center. You can rent snowshoes, Monday through Friday, starting at 1:00 in the afternoon with last rental at 3:00. On the weekends, you can start renting at 10:00 in the morning and you must return all snowshoes by four in the afternoon.
Snowshoe Hikes
Periodically, the Huron-Clinton Metroparks hold snowshoe hiking events. During the 2010 through 2011 season, they held one hike on January 15 with preregistration required and a fee of just $3. People in the area are encouraged to call ahead and plan for a trek through the woods, fit for both people who have and have not worked with snowshoes.
Meet-Up Groups
Online groups often schedule meet-ups for people who chat online to go snowshoeing together. It's very similar to the snowshoe hikes that the Metroparks offer, but the meet-up groups can schedule events more frequently. Also, some groups plan a luncheon or drinks outside the parks after a hike.
Other Considerations
All parks charge visitors for parking. An annual parking pass, which allows you entry into all 13 Metroparks, costs $25 and is only $15 for people over 62. A simple daily pass costs $5 or you can get a joint permit, which allows you entry into all Huron-Clinton and Oakland County Metroparks for one year.
