Step-by-Step Directions for a Bird Call

Bird calls are used by bird-watchers and ornithologists around the world, though the calls can also be used to make you the center of attention at your next party. Whistles that imitate the calls of specific birds can be purchased, though making a bird call with your hands can still attract a multitude of birds. Someone accomplished in hand cooing, hand whistling or bird calling can even learn to perform musical numbers by using his hands.

Instructions

    • 1

Download or stream recordings of bird calls and songs. Listen to the recordings to get an understanding of how different birds sound. As you move your hands and adjust your pitch to do a bird call, remember how you want your call to sound.

    • 2

Lay palms side-by-side, facing up. Gently curl your hands, pushing them into a cupped shape. Press your hands together, entwining all fingers except the thumbs and leaving a hollow space around the thumb area. Hands should be firmly cupped together to prevent air from escaping.

    • 3

Press thumbs side-by-side over the hollow space created in Step 2. A slight opening should remain between your thumbs. Lift your hands and press them to your face, with the tops of thumbs falling vertically just below your nose. The opening between your thumbs should be short enough that your upper lip will rest above it, and your bottom lip will rest below it.

    • 4

Blow against the space between your thumbs to create a bird call. Increase or decrease your air pressure or change the position of your mouth to affect your tone and pitch as you make the bird call. You can also tighten or loosen the gap between your thumbs to affect the sound that you create.
