How to Repair Screen Room Zippers

The tent is the outdoorsman's humble abode during a relaxing or adventurous camping trip. Just because a tent is simple doesn't mean it is unimportant or nonessential. On the contrary, a tent provides essential protection from the elements and wildlife. This is one reason why the zipper on the screen room door needs to work properly -- a broken screen room door will leave you exposed. Fixing a zipper on a screen room door can be quick and requires only a few household tools.

Instructions

  1. Jammed Slider

    • 1

Inspect the entire zipper line for any dirt, debris or threading that may have got caught in the zipper's teeth. These will prevent the slider from moving.

    • 2

Remove debris by hand. Threading will have to be cut away with scissors, but remove the threading gently as to not pull any more threading from the stitching of the tent.

    • 3

Spray a small amount of lubricant from the inside of the tent onto the teeth of the zipper. This will help the slider move along the teeth. Spraying the lubricant on the outside will only attract more dirt and debris.

    Teeth Won't Catch (Loose Zipper)

    • 4

Move the slider all the way down to the end of the zipper line.

    • 5

Squeeze the inside of the slider (where the teeth are fed through) gently with needle-nose pliers. If your tent is old, the slider is likely worn out and is failing to catch the teeth on the zipper. Squeezing the slider with pliers will help restore the slider to its original shape.

    • 6

Move the slider up and down until the teeth start catching and close. Continually move the slider back into the starting position and give another squeeze with the needle-nose pliers until the screen room zipper is back in working condition.
