Groups That Save the Polar Bears

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species classifies polar bears as vulnerable, one step away from being endangered. Global climate change is the biggest threat to the survival of the species. As the polar ice caps melt, both the size and quality of the polar bear habitat will decrease, placing great strain upon the large creatures.
  1. Polar Bears International

    • Polar Bears International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to polar bear conservation. The group aims to promote the plight of the polar bear through research, education and stewardship. It has a global outlook and disseminates only fact-based, scientifically gathered, peer-reviewed information, according to the organization's official website. There are a number of ways to support Polar Bears International, such as direct donations and a symbolic polar bear adoption program.

    World Wide Fund for Nature

    • The World Wide Fund for Nature is a global conservation body that has been active in the world's Arctic regions for more than 20 years. The organization works alongside many local and global communities to help protect the arctic environment. According to the WWF website, their strategy focuses on supporting field research, educating the public and reducing threats to polar bears, their habitat and their prey. You can support the WWF polar bear protection program by becoming a member and donating to the cause. The website also has a gift program that generates royalties for the WWF, and a polar bear adoption process.

    National Wildlife Federation

    • The National Wildlife Federation is the largest nonprofit conservation organization in the U.S. In an attempt to help save the polar bears of Alaska, the NWF is asking people to complete and send a template message to Congress and President Obama, urging them to oppose industries that seek to undermine the Clean Air Act. As of February 2011, they are only 3 percent short of their initial target of 20,000 submitted messages.

    Defenders of Wildlife

    • Defenders of Wildlife is a nonprofit organization that aims to protect and restore America's native wildlife. The organization has a strong focus upon direct human interactions with polar bears. In 2009, Defenders of Wildlife, working alongside the International Fund for Animal Welfare, began a campaign against the international trade of polar bear parts such as hides and trophy heads. The group also campaigns for permanent protection for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a vital polar bear sanctuary. You can support the organization through donations and adoption kits.

    Greenpeace

    • At times controversial, Greenpeace is nonetheless a highly effective organization in terms of promoting environmental awareness. According to their website, the group uses nonviolent, creative confrontation to expose global environmental problems, and to force the solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future. Greenpeace highlighted the plight of the polar bear in 2006 with a campaign called "Project Thin Ice." The project continues to educate people about global warming and its effect upon the polar bear habitat.
