How to Use Mineral Oil for Tanning Fur

Animal skin or fur can be turned into leather via the tanning process. That process, which involves the washing, drying, and shaping of the skin, can turn the tearable material into a durable product that will last long and hold up against wear and tear. As part of that process, mineral oil often comes into play, serving as a sealant and protectant after the fur has been washed and treated as part of the tanning process.

Instructions

    • 1

Tan the animal fur using a predetermined tanning method. While the exact steps may vary, tanning typically requires the thorough washing of the fur, and then soaking it in some sort of salt solution as a way to treat the skin. The fur is then usually hung up in an isolated location to dry after being soaked in the salt solution.

    • 2

Rub the mineral oil into the fur after it has dried completely. Apply the oil to the cloth, and then rub it into the fur using even, circular motions. Make sure the entire surface is covered evenly, and that no areas are saturated with oil. The oil only needs to be applied to the skin or fur side, not the flesh side underneath. Several coats may be needed, depending on the type of skin and how much oil it requires.

Set aside the skin, again in an isolated place, to dry after being coated in oil. Then wash the skin several times by hand or in a washing machine, until the skin obtains the desired texture.
