Homemade Weather Scales

You use homemade weather scales to chart weather patterns, either for education or personal interest. You can maintain your weather scale in a notebook or on your computer. Homemade weather scales are not as accurate as those professional weather forecasters use.

    • At about the same times each day, you should chart any combination of these weather indicators: high and low temperatures, barometric pressures, humidity, wind directions and measurable precipitation. Charting the hours of sunshine in the day is also an option.

    Cloud Cover and Fog

    • To chart cloud cover, describe how cloudy or clear it is. For fog, technically, visibility is less than approximately a half mile. Thus, choose three or four reference points at varying distances, and base fog conditions on their visibility.

    Suggestion

    • The devices you need to measure weather indicators are not expensive. However, with a little ingenuity, you can manufacture some of them. For example, you can make a wind sock out of a piece of nylon.
