Netting Instructions

Hooking a fish and working it over to the side of your boat is only part of the job. After all, the fish isn't considered caught until it's in your boat and you can hold it up for a photo opportunity. The best way to get the fish into your hand is with a net. Proper netting technique can make or break the chance to show off your catch. If done improperly, the fish can break off your line or become unhooked and get away.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the net directly over the side of the boat. Hold the "bag" of the net with one hand, and the handle of the net with the other. There is no special technique to gripping the handle, just make sure that you are comfortable and the net is secured.

    • 2

Wait for the fish to be brought alongside the boat. Do not reach out for it prematurely. Trying to net it too soon can allow the fish a chance to get away.

    • 3

Bring the net underneath the fish in one fluid motion. Once it is in place, release the bag and the fish will drop into the net. Grasp the handle with both hand and swing the net up and over the side of the boat.
