Springs
Springs are a source of fresh water that can be used for consumption. Springs occur when rainwater is filtered down through the earth's soil and is naturally pushed up through the surface at a low level to form small-scale freshwater lakes. However, springs can become contaminated by pollutants in the ground soil.
Lakes and Rivers
Lakes and rivers are a resource found all over the globe. Many naturally occurring lakes and rivers are contaminated with urban pollution runoff and cannot be used as drinking water but still serve as an environment for wildlife systems. Despite urban pollution, some rivers and lakes have remained uncontaminated and have viable water. There are also man-made lakes that are preserved and regularly cleaned to serve as safe environments for endangered wildlife.
Oceans
The ocean covers a majority of the world's surface and is another source of water on the planet. While ocean water can be distilled and used for drinking water, the process of breaking the chemical bond between salt and water and removing salt from ocean water requires a high amount of energy and technology, which makes this option more expensive.
Glaciers
Glaciers contain the largest amount of fresh water on the planet. That doesn't mean glaciers can be easily tapped into as a source for drinking water, though, because most of the fresh water available from glaciers is in its frozen form.
