Things You'll Need
Instructions
Stop Feeding Algae.
Follow the instructions that come with your fish food. Feeding your fish too much, will result in phosphates and nitrogen compounds in the water. This helps algae grow.
Take out as much of the feed water as you can, before adding more food.
Rinse your hands thoroughly before coming into contact with the water of the aquarium, as soaps also have phosphates.
Lessen Light in the Aquarium
Move your tank away from windows. Too much natural sunlight boosts algae growth.
Create more shade for the tank. Closing your curtains for longer periods, is one way to achieve this.
Leave the aquarium lights on for 6 to 8 hours each day, if your tank only consists of fish.
Pond Solutions
Add floating pond plants, such as Anarchris, if your algae problem is in your pond. These absorb nutrients from the water, which stops the growth of algae.
Cover 50 percent of your pond's surface with floating pond plants. These will not only absorb a lot of nutrients, but block sunlight from entering the water.
Plant some evergreen underwater plants. These naturally clean the water and add oxygen, stunting algae growth.
Use gravel as a base for your pond plants. Using soil will provide algae with the conditions they need to grow.
Introduce snails and tadpoles to your pond. They will eat algae.
Manually Clean Pond
Clean your pond in the autumn.
Remove dead foliage from the base of the pond. By the time summer arrives, this rotten vegetation will become nutrition for the algae.
Use a pond net or a pond vacuum to make sure you have cleaned the pond thoroughly.
