How to Shine Spiders

Shining spiders is an overnight camp activity that is fun, interesting and educational. This activity is safe, easy and appropriate for school-age children to conduct without adult supervision, provided they understand that it is important to not purposefully disturb the spider or the spider's habitat.

Instructions

    • 1
      Use any size flashlight.

Turn on the flashlight, hold it facing forward and step out onto the grass.

    • 2
Your temple is just to the side of your eye.

Place the flashlight against your temple so that the light beam shines forward and the lens is even with your face.

    • 3

Look out over the yard, slowly moving your head to scan the entire yard. You are looking for emerald green eyes that are looking at the light. Move slowly so that you don't miss the shining eyes of the spiders.

    • 4

Walk forward, holding your gaze on the green eyes once you spot them. Walk until you are close enough to actually see the spider's body, about 12 inches away.
