How to Make Food for Deer to Coat Tree Trunks

In 2006, approximately 10.7 million Americans hunted bigger game animals, such as deer, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Many of these hunters also sat in their deer blinds or tree stands and never got their buck or doe. One way to lure deer to your site is through the use of a homemade deer bait that can be spread on trees. Check with your local authorities to ensure that deer baiting is legal in your state. The mixture can also be used to attract these beautiful animals for observation or photography.

Instructions

    • 1

Chop one apple into several fine pieces.

    • 2

Mix one cup peanut butter, one half cup molasses and the apple chunks in a medium-sized bowl. The peanut butter and molasses will create a sticky consistency that will keep the attractant stuck to the tree.

    • 3

Smear the attractant onto the lower one third of the trees, using a wooden spoon. Wear rubber gloves while spreading the attractant onto the tree to avoid transferring the scent from your skin to the mixture, which will deter the deer.

    • 4

Repeat spreading the mixture onto the trees as needed. The attractant will need to be reapplied after a rain storm or if it was consumed by animals during the night.
