DIY Limestone

Limestone slabs were used in some of the world's earliest construction projects, including the Egyptian pyramids. Limestone is still used as an ingredient in concrete and for restoration of grass lawns suffering from a pH imbalance. Limestone is a sedimentary rock containing calcite, a mineral formed from the shells and skeletons of sea creatures over long periods of time, often millions of years. But you can participate in a simple science experiment to make your own limestone in a matter of days.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1/4 cup of Epsom salts into the mason jar.

    • 2

Add the small rocks, pebbles, sand, broken seashells and dry lime plaster to the jar.

    • 3

Pour water into the jar, leaving 2 inches empty.

    • 4

Attach the lid to the jar.

    • 5

Shake the jar to thoroughly mix the contents.

    • 6

Set the jar down, and check on it every hour to observe how the materials settle.

    • 7

Pour out the water when the layers have settled.

    • 8

Let the jar and its contents completely dry. When it's dry, you'll have a limestone rock.
