Agriculture
The largest driving force in deforestation is agriculture. Farmers regularly clear forest land to expand croplands and provide livestock with more land to graze. Commonly, farmers will clear several acres of forest land by cutting down trees and burning them in a practice known as "slash and burn" agriculture.
Logging
Logging operations account for the loss of countless numbers of trees each year while helping meet the world's demand for wood and paper products. Logging companies often clear roads to access remote forests, causing more deforestation. On a regular basis, logging operations clear forests to accommodate expanding urbanization.
Effects
Deforestation has many environmentally damaging side effects, including climate change, destruction of millions of species' habitats and robbing the atmosphere of the greenhouse gas absorption that trees naturally provide. Trees also play a vital role in the water cycle by returning water into the atmosphere. Without trees to play their role in this process, deforested lands often become arid wastelands.
