How to Make Candles With Chinese Tallow

Cotton candle wicks

Candle molds

Chinese tallow

Candle wax (a slow-burning kind to coat the Chinese tallow with)

Metal container to hold the melted tallow

A hob or gas flame

A drying rack or line to hang the wicks from

Things You'll Need

  • The Chinese Tallow Tree bears waxy seeds that can be boiled to release the wax, which floats to the top and is skimmed off to be used for candle-making. Chinese Tallow does not create an odor when burning, making it an ideal candle wax. It creates a strong, bright flame. The only drawback of Chinese Tallow is that it burns very rapidly. If you are using it to make candles, make sure to coat the candle in a more slow-burning melted wax, available from any good crafts store.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Chinese Tallow in a metal container, and heat it slowly on a hob or gas flame.

    • 2

Dip a cotton wick in the tallow and hang it from the drying rack or line, until it has cooled and hardened.

    • 3

Place the cooled, tallow-coated wick in the candle mold and pour the desired amount of molten tallow into the mold.

    • 4

Repeat the process until you have filled the desired number of candle molds.

    • 5

Place the full candle molds in the fridge or freezer, to enable them to cool more quickly.

    • 6

In a separate container, melt the alternative type of wax.

    • 7

Remove each hardened, cooled candle from its mold. Dip the candle into the alternative molten wax, coating it thoroughly from top to bottom.

    • 8

Place it on the drying rack to cool, and repeat the process with the other candles until they have all been coated with an outer layer of a different kind of wax. The candles are now ready to be burned. Their burning time will increase because of the second layer of wax, which slows down the burning of the tallow.
