Acclimatization
Depending on the plant species, roots acclimatize to different temperatures and adjust their respiratory rates accordingly. After a period of slower respiration and metabolism in colder weather, at a given temperature threshold, growth respiration begins and spring growth is stimulated.
Dieback
During the warmest times of the year, the increased root respiration rate may result in carbohydrate starvation. The roots die back while growth of plant shoots continues to be supported.
Additional Facts
Temperature is only one of a number of factors that influence root respiration. Water and nutrient supply, soil acidity and salinity must also be considered.
