How to Preserve Renewable Resources

Renewable resources such as wood and water can be replenished, but they can also become polluted or depleted if not managed properly. The global community is becoming increasingly aware of the role humans play as environmental stewards in preserving our natural resources. The slogan "Reduce, reuse, recycle" was developed to help educate people about ways to preserve our natural resources and protect the planet. A fourth practice-- "renew" -- could be added to the slogan as a reminder to replace or replenish what we use, and is at the heart of the philosophy of sustainability.

Instructions

Replant trees. The lumber industry has learned this rule. Until recently, the world's forests were being harvested to extinction, destroying natural habitats and hurting agriculture. Deforestation was also contributing to global warming, because fewer trees were available to consume carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. Timber is now cultivated and harvested on vast farms using methods to prevent erosion and protect natural habitats while ensuring a continuous wood supply.

    • 2

Recycle. Reusing wood and recycling paper reduces the need for virgin lumber. Reuse wood in construction and building projects, to make refurbished wood pallets, and for mulch, animal bedding, landscaping and fuel. Install reduced-flow shower heads and faucets to help preserve water supplies while minimizing the amount of energy needed to treat wastewater, and cut down on water bills in the process.

    • 3

Dispose of materials properly. Inventory your house and garage for old paint, medicine, chemicals and other potentially toxic substances that can contaminate the soil or pollute the groundwater. Do not flush or pour them down the drain. Check with your local municipality or waste recycling company for a recycling center or disposal site where you can dispose of these items safely. Do not use treated wood in the ground or burn it for fuel because it contains toxic chemicals that can contaminate the soil, groundwater or air.

Be a responsible consumer. Avoid buying or eating fish and wildlife that are being harvested to extinction or captured using methods that destroy their habitats or endanger other wildlife. Organizations such as the National Wildlife Federation publish lists of endangered species. Sustainable consumerism will ensure that the plants and animals we eat today can regenerate their species for future generations. Buy cleaning supplies and other household chemicals that create the least environmental impact and will not contaminate the ground or water supply.
