How to Get Nightcrawlers With Electricity

Nightcrawlers are typically caught to be used as bait. After a rainstorm these worms can be easy to find on the surface, but there are other ways to catch nightcrawlers when nature does not cooperate. Using an electric current, you can get nightcrawlers to come out of the ground where they will be easy to collect.

Things You'll Need

  • Car battery
  • Jumper cables
  • 2 metal rods

    • 1

Place each of the rods into the ground. They should be approximately two feet apart from each other.

    • 2

Attach one end of the jumper cable to the positive side of the battery. The positive side of the battery is typically colored red.

    • 3

Attach the corresponding black end of the jumper cable to the negative side of the battery.

    • 4

Connect the other red end of the jumper cable to one of the metal rods. This is the start of the current.

    • 5

Attach the negative end of the jumper cables to the other metal rod. This will complete the circuit. Electricity will be running down the rods and through the ground. This will disturb the worms.

    • 6

Wait approximately an hour to see if worms begin to surface. The worms should still be alive and be ready to collect.
