Temperatures
In the Tundra region, temperatures dip as low as minus-60 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter and climb as high as 50 degrees during the summer. Soil in the Tundra is permanently frozen and is called permafrost. July and August are typically the warmest months in the region while February and March are generally the coldest.
Precipitation
Though precipitation is light in the Tundra, there are areas which receive more precipitation than the rest of the region. For instance, Nome, Alaska, receives 18.4 inches of precipitation because it is located near the ocean.
Alpine Tundra
While the Tundra region is located in the Arctic around the North Pole, there are smaller tundra regions, called alpine tundras, located elsewhere in the world. These smaller tundra regions are located at the tops of cold mountains.
