How to Make Fog Using Dry Ice

When fog rolls over the stage at a theater production or out of a pot of holiday brew, the fog is usually made by dry ice. The temperature of dry ice is an extreme minus 109. 3 degrees Fahrenheit. When hot water is poured over dry ice, it causes fog-like vapors to develop and rise from the water and dry ice combination. Dependent upon how much dry ice you use, you can create a fog effect for a space as small as your punch bowl or as big as a large room.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place two industrial-sized buckets of at least 10-gallons each in the room in which you want to make fog. Space the buckets evenly in order to distribute the fog equally throughout the room.

    • 2
Safety goggles protect your eyes from coming in contact with dry ice.

Protect your eyes and skin from dry ice burns by wearing safety goggles, gloves and clothing that covers your arms and legs.

    • 3

Set 10 pounds of dry ice in each bucket. Pour hot (not boiling) water over the dry ice until it's covered to begin the reaction that creates the dry ice fog effect. This is enough to make fog in a room for up to one hour.

Create an eery, rolling fog with the help of a fan.

Create a rolling fog effect by placing an electric fan a few feet away from each bucket. Turn the fan on low to push the fog slowly forward. Oscillate the fan if you want the fog to move in different directions.
