How to Use a Scope With a Variable Objective Lens

A rifle scope has two primary functions. It magnifies distant figures so you can see them clearly, and it makes shots more accurate. All rifle scopes have a reticle to identify the focal point of the scope. This allows you to align the reticle over your target when you want to fire. The magnification you need depends on your situation. Variable-power scopes offer an advantage over fixed-power scopes.

Instructions

    • 1

Sight your scope using the highest magnification setting. The magnification wheel is usually located on the side of the scope. Magnification will be listed as "minimum magnification -- maximum magnification," followed by the objective lens diameter.

    • 2

Consider the range at which you will be shooting. For ranges of up to 100 yards, "7x" is sufficient. For ranges of 100 to 200 yards, "9x" is better.

Set up targets at varying distances if you're unsure which magnification to use for a particular distance; use the scope for each one.

    • 3

Consider the area in which you will be shooting. Use higher magnifications in open fields, but remember that higher magnification will make it more difficult to see through areas with thick cover.

    • 4

Adjust the magnification on your scope according to your situation. You might start off hunting in the woods, which requires a lower magnification; A higher magnification is better suited for your needs if you move to a blind that overlooks an open field.
