Mississippi's Climate & Weather

A humid subtropical climate is found in Mississippi. The state is known for long, hot, humid summers and short, temperate winters. There is plentiful rainfall and even a chance of snow in the winter.
  1. Average Temperatures

    • The mean annual temperature is 62 degrees Fahrenheit for northern Mississippi and 68 degrees F for the southern part of the state. July is the hottest month in Mississippi and the temperature averages 82 degrees F. January is the coldest month with an average temperature of 48 degrees F. It is not uncommon for the temperature to drop below freezing in the winter.

    Major Storms

    • Hurricanes may move through Mississippi in late summer and fall. They often move northward from the Gulf of Mexico. Two tornado alleys cross the state from southwest to northeast. The alleys are located from Vicksburg to Oxford and from McComb to Tupelo.

    Precipitation

    • The average rainfall in Mississippi ranges between 50 and 65 inches per year. More rainfall typically falls near the coast than in the northern part of the state. Violent and destructive thunderstorms occur in the summer. Snow or sleet may fall in the winter. Rainfall is usually distributed throughout the year. There is high humidity between May and September.
