How to Turn Fahrenheit Into Celsius

The temperature unit indicators Fahrenheit and Celsius describe temperature measurements in different degree scales. Since temperature is a physical quantity that requires a reference point to ensure that the scale readings (which are actually differences) are meaningful, both of these conventions have arisen with fixed reference points. In the Fahrenheit scale, the difference between the boiling point and the freezing point of water is 180 degrees. In Celsius, it is 100 degrees. Both conventions were commonly used as of 2010, necessitating conversion between the two.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. Punch this value into your calculator.

    • 2

Use your calculator to subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature value.

    • 3

Multiply the result of the Fahrenheit measurement by 5, and then divide by 9 to get the Celsius equivalent of the original temperature. From this, we see that the Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion appears as: TC = (TF - 32)(5/9) where TC is the temperature given in Celsius and TF is the temperature given in Fahrenheit.
