Kite and Balloon Meteorological Observations
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association the Department of Agriculture established the U.S. Weather Bureau in 1891. The weather bureau began regular kite observations in 1898 with the last flight taking place in 1933. Balloon meteorological observations began in 1909.
The First Meteorological Satellite
On April 1, 1960, a fully equipped meteorological satellite called TIROS l was successfully launched for the first time. According to the NOAA, President Kennedy's State of the Union address in 1961 included an invitation to all nations throughout the world to join the U.S. in implementing an international weather prediction system.
The World Weather Watch, the NOAA and the NWS
The world weather watch was implemented in 1968. On October 03, 1970, President Nixon established the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) and the National Weather Service (NWS).
