Apparatus and Lens Sizing
The size of the spotting scope determines the lens's size when it comes to sporting optics. Swarovski has two sizes to choose from: the full-sized 80 mm and compact 65 mm scopes. The full-size model's lens has a larger diameter, which lets more light into the apparatus. The light dictates the amount of visible detail the scope can provide, thus more light equals crisper images. The smaller 65 mm lens is designed for the more compact spotting scope. Because of its size, the smaller scopes are recommended for watchers that intend to move to multiple locations.
Body's Construction
Bird spotting scopes are produced in both straight and angled bodies, but, angled bodies are easier for people of all heights to use, according to "Birder's World Magazine." Swarovski spotting scopes tend to feature the angled design, which means the eyepiece is slightly angled upward, as opposed to being completely flat. Additionally, Swarovski scopes are durable and lightweight because of the body's magnesium alloy construction.
Glass Treatments
Spotting scopes tend to use specially treated glass, including HD (high-definition), ED (extra-low dispersion of light), FL (fluoride ions) and FC (fluorite crystals). Swarovski scopes are no exception, as many of its models use high-definition glass that contains fluoride ions. This type of glass treatment helps to reduce chromatic aberration, which is the fragmenting of the image's color as it passes through glass. Thus, the treated glass aids in producing a more image-perfect high-contrasted picture.
Another glass treatment used in Swarovski spotting scopes is its unique "Swaroclean" coating. This external coating helps to make the glass waterproof and fog-proof, while repelling the amount of residue on the glass's outer surface.
Eyepieces
The magnification and zoom are some of the main functions of the spotting scope's eyepiece. Like most scopes, Swarovski eyepieces are detachable and come in various magnifications, from wide-angled to zoom lens. It offers 30X magnification on its static wide-angle eyepiece, while the zooming models are available in 20 to 60X and even a wide-angle 25 to 55X magnification. Each eyepiece is fitted with a bayonet connector so that the bird watcher can interchange the lenses quietly and not disturb his subjects. Furthermore, the eyepieces have a safety mechanism to prevent unscrewing and are compatible with most of Swarovski spotting scope models.
