Manual and Scrench
Perhaps the most important tool isn't really a tool -- it's an owner's manual, which tells you how to keep your chainsaw tuned up. Husqvarna's national repair center identifies a scrench -- a screwdriver/wrench -- as the only essential tool. It has a double-sided wrench on one end and a screwdriver tip on the other. One wrench side fits the nuts to keep the bar tight on the Husqvarna body; the other side fits the spark plug. The screwdriver tip tightens or loosen the bar adjustment.
The owner's manual and a scrench usually come with the chainsaw, but you can purchase a manual from Husqvarna, and buy a scrench online, from the company, a dealer, a home improvement or tool retailer.
Sharpening Tools
Tools to keep your chain sharp include a round file -- but make sure it's the right size for your Husqvarna, as a file that's too small or too big can damage the chain teeth. Buy a flat file to periodically flatten tops of the saw teeth, and a file guide, which fastens to the bar to keep the file in the proper position as you sharpen the saw. Reader's Digest Fix-It manual also suggests a power tool sharpener. Husqvarna says to periodically clean out the slot on the bar in which the chain moves.
Some Repairs Need Professionals
Owners can change air and fuel filters themselves, but Husqvarna says chainsaw engine repairs are best left to professional shops. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires carburetor repairs be done by an authorized service center. A Husqvarna maintenance kit contains a spark plug and filters. You can buy individual items such as chain sprockets, oilers, spark plugs, new chains or new bars from Husqvarna, a dealer or a parts house.
