Rock Pool Ecosystems

Rock pool ecosystems, more commonly known as tide pools, consist of small pools along a rocky shore. These pools, created by ocean waves and lake tides, team with life brought in by the tides and are found around the world.
  1. Habitat

    • Rock pools are small and contained, but get a fresh supply of water as the tide or water line rises. Often found along a coast with no trees, the pools get direct sunlight throughout much of the day. Near oceans, with the constant influx of cold seawater and warmth from the sun, the temperature and salinity of the pool changes dramatically and frequently.

    Plant Life

    • Algae, detached seaweed, and other aquatic plants native to the region both grow in the rock pools and become floating debris when brought in by tides. The plants provide food and oxygen to the system.

    Animal Life

    • Crabs, sea stars, snails, small fish, brine shrimp and mussels are just some of the many animals found in rock pools. Many animals that survive in these ecosystems have adapted to the rough conditions by developing shells or the ability to remain affixed to the sides of rocks and substrate.
