How to Close a Pocketknife

Though your pocketknife offers the advantages of portability and versatility, you can still hurt yourself if you don't know how to safely close the knife. The good news is, learning how to close your pocketknife safely is easy enough that even Boy and Girl Scouts regularly learn this essential skill at a very young age. Once you have learned this skill, you will never again be in danger of cutting yourself when handling your pocketknife.

Instructions

      Grip the open pocketknife firmly in your left hand, palm up and thumb on the left, with the sharp edge facing upward and the pointed end facing toward your body.

      Grip the bottom, dull edge of the blade with your right hand so that your right forefinger is on the side of the blade farthest from your body and your right thumb is on the side that is closest to your body. The bottom side of the blade should be resting on top of your right hand, palm inward and thumb on top, with your forefinger and thumb gripping the sides of the blade near the bottom.

      Press the blade safety lever with your left thumb.

      Lift the blade upward and over with your right hand until the knife is fully closed.
