The Tree
The four types of pinon trees are the Mexican pinon, single-leaf pinon, Parry pinon and the standard pinon. Pinon trees produce edible seeds that were once a staple in Native Americans' diets. Pinon trees commonly are found in foothills, mesas or canyons.
Firewood
Commonly burned in small, front-loading fireplaces or ovens called chimineas, pinon firewood is known for its pine aroma and ability to repel mosquitoes and other flying insects. Also used in traditional brick fireplaces, pinon firewood burns well with other types of wood and is a good heat producer.
Packaging
Pinon firewood is commonly sold by volume instead of by weight. The firewood is cut into small pieces that enables it to fit inside of a chiminea or fireplace. A bag of pinon firewood weighs between 25 and 35 lbs. and costs $45 in 2010.
