Alpine Rose
This rose is a common sight across the Alpine regions, from the hedges of dense forests to the short grass of meadows and tundra that stretch through the mountains.
The shrub can grow up to a meter in height and has light branches. The flowers typically have five large dark pink petals. The Alpine rose blossoms during the summer months of June, July and August and can be found up to a height of approximately 2,600 meters.
Globe Flower
Another common sight is the globe flower. A member of the buttercup family, this flower is distinctive for its large yellow orbs, which can have up to 12 tubular flowers inside. Globe flowers have small stems and can be found in meadows and pastures up to about 3,600 meters. They usually blossom between April and June.
Alpine Gentian
The Alpine gentian is a delicate plant found in the short grass across meadows during the summer months. Its stem branches off at the base and bears several star-shaped flowers which consist of five bright-blue tipped leaves. It is believed to stimulate the appetite.
Orange Lily
The orange lily is a bulbous plant that can be found at the edges of forests and in bushes and mountain meadows. Growing at altitudes close to 2,500 meters, this lily has a stem that can reach heights of 90 cm., and a large funnel-shaped orange flower.
Rock Jasmine
Not the most common sight in Alpine flora but a colorful one is this flower that hugs the ground in rocky, mountainous areas. It blooms with small clusters of reddish-pink flowers visible during the summer months of July and August. Rock jasmine is one of the few plants in the Alps that grows above 4,000 meters.
Pyramidal Bugle
This plant thrives in rocky areas with dry, lime-deficient soil up to altitudes of 2,800 meters.
Reaching heights of approximately 30 cm., its hairy stem sprouts oval-shaped leaves that are violet in color.
Edelweiss
One of the most well-known plants of the Alpine region is the Edelweiss. This plant can be found in rocky areas at high altitudes of up to 3,400 meters, reaching heights of approximately 20 cm. Its star-shaped flower is white and has a woolly texture. The popularity of the edelweiss has caused it to become an endangered plant near extinction.
