The NRCS Conservation Innovation Grants

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Conservation Innovation Grants, run by the Department of Agriculture, are designed to promote the development and use of innovative conservation techniques and technologies in agricultural production.
  1. Funding Components

    • The Conservation Innovation Grants are composed of two funding components: national and state. The national component allows grantees to apply for up to $2 million for a single project. In 2009, the NRCS awarded $20 million in national grants. The state component varies yearly and is overseen by the State Conservationists or Directors. The amount of funds available to individual state grants can't exceed $75,000. Successful applicants may receive grants up to 50 percent of the total project cost.

    Project Eligibility

    • Eligible projects should demonstrate the use of innovative technologies to address a conservation issue. These may focus on different conservation areas such as forest health, wildlife habitat, grazing land and soil and water resources. Some of the technology needs that the NCRS has identified in the past are related to water management, improvement of on-farm energy efficiency, nutrient management to improve water quality and the transfer of conservation technology knowledge to farmers or ranchers.

    Who is Eligible?

    • Nonfederal governmental or nongovernmental organizations, individuals or federally recognized Indian tribes are eligible to apply.
