The Average Georgia Rainfall

The largest contributor to the average annual rainfall in a location within Georgia is the terrain. The mountainous regions in the northeast receive the most, while the central regions receive the least. Everywhere in Georgia experiences its wettest month in March and its driest during the autumn.
  1. Northeastern Mountains

    • The mountainous region of northeastern Georgia receives, on average, over 60 inches of rain per year. Some localized areas within this region can receive up to 90 inches per year. The average rainfall amounts in the region vary widely, due to the large differences in elevation from between 1,100 feet to as much as 4,000 feet above sea level.

    Northern Georgia

    • Northern Georgia elevations are smoother than in the mountainous northeast, so the climate does not vary quite as wildly. The average rainfall in this region ranges from 50 to 55 inches per year.

    Central Georgia

    • This region encompasses the area from Athens to Atlanta to Columbus and Macon. Central Georgia receives, on average, the least rain of the state's other regions -- 45 to 50 inches per year.

    Southern Georgia

    • Southern Georgia's climate is similar to that of northern Georgia, except that it is significantly more humid. This region receives between 50 and 55 inches of rain per year, on average.
