Things You'll Need
Instructions
Find a park or woodland area that is set aside from the noises of the city. Look for an area that's known for its birds and wildlife. A body of water, such as a lake or river, will increase the variety of sounds you can capture.
Capture outside sounds using a digital recording device. Using a digital device avoids the hissing sounds created by tape-based analog recorders. Use a Mini-disc or SD-card recorder. Make sure the recording device is compatible with your computer.
Attach the stereo microphone to the recording device's "Mic" jack. A stereo microphone, as opposed to a mono microphone, will create recordings that are closest to the experience of being in nature.
Test the recording device. Attach a pair of headphones to the recording device and press "Record." Count from one to ten, then press "Stop." Play the recording back to confirm its quality and precision.
Attach the wind sock to the microphone. This will alleviate the hissing sounds and interference caused by wind blowing on the microphone. Place yourself in a location where you believe you will gather the sounds you are most interested in capturing. Record the sounds of nature.
