Features
Most lines of foul weather gear include parkas, bibs, boots, gloves and more. There are different materials, each with different levels of waterproofing and breathability. PVC is the most waterproof, but lacks breathability. Polyurethane is a lighter, more breathable option, but is less waterproof. According to the Boat Owners Association of the United States, neoprene is the best option and is also the most expensive.
Considerations
Foul weather gear offers many features. Check for breathability, looking for an inner lining that allows condensation to collect on the outside of the shell. Consider the fabric's weight and flexibility for comfort. Other features to consider are underarm vents, heavy duty zippers that won't rust, sealed seams to prevent leaks and fleece-lined pockets.
Common Brands
Foul weather gear brands include Grundens, Helly Hansen, Musto, Patagonia and Henri-Lloyd. Gear can be purchased through on-line stores, as well as at various locations throughout the US and Europe.
