How to Build a Wall Mount Swamp Cooler

An evaporative cooler, often called a "swamp cooler," is any system that pulls air through wet material and blows that cooled air into a room or house. Effective only in areas with moderate to low humidity, swamp coolers are a cheaper way to cool down your living quarters and are cleaner for the environment. If there is one room you are particularly interested in cooling, then a window-mounted swamp cooler may be what you want.

Things You'll Need

  • Window fan
  • 2 long shelf brackets
  • Metal curtain rod
  • Long cake pan
  • Table
  • Clothespins
  • Screwdriver
  • Insect screen (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Mount a window fan on the selected window, according to manufacturer instructions. Look for a fan that moves the most cubic feet per minute for the dimensions of the window. Mount the fan blowing into the room. If security is not an issue and you want to leave the window unit mounted, seal the edges and mount an insect screen on the exterior side of your fan box.

    • 2

Mount two shelf brackets at least eight inches long as near as possible to the top corners of the window. Attach a metal curtain rod at the ends of the shelf brackets.

    • 3

Move a table of any kind under the window, one that reaches as closely as possible to the level of the lower sill. Place a long cake pan on the table, and fill it half full of water.

    • 4

Dampen a clean towel. Fold the towel longitudinally in half, and drape it over the curtain rod. Adjust the towel so the tail hangs exactly to the bottom of the cake pan, touching the water. Secure the towel to the curtain rod with clothespins.

    • 5

Turn on the fan so it blows through the wet towel.
