What Things Can Be Made From Seaweed?

Humans have been using seaweed for thousands of years and it has many industrial and agricultural uses today. There are lots of things you can make with common seaweed collected from your nearest beach. Wash thoroughly before use to remove sand and salt.
  1. Skin Conditioner

    • Dry seaweed (kelp, bladderwrack or any common variety). Grind in a food processor and mix with coconut oil. Spread the paste over your body and wrap yourself in a towel. Relax for 15 to 30 minutes. Rinse and shower.

    Make a Weather Predictor

    • Hang a large piece of unwashed kelp on a hook outside your home. The BBC Weather Center advises that if the seaweed feels dry then it is unlikely to rain.

    Garden Fertilizer

    • Allow seaweed to dry. Place around plants to decompose naturally. According to Michael Guiry, author of "Seaweed Resources in Europe: Uses and Potential," seaweed provides a rich source of beneficial nutrients.

    Halloween Costume

    • Fashion an old dark-colored bed sheet into a garment by cutting a hole for your head. Sew strips of kelp or bladderwrack all over the sheet. Make a head covering in the same way.

    Healthy Seaweed Bath

    • Place a bucketful of seaweed in an empty bath. Fill with very hot water to release the minerals. Get in when water has cooled sufficiently. Relax for 30 minutes before showering.
