What Are the Benefits of Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions?

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has stated that humans are exerting a discernible influence on the earth's climate. Many scientists, including the director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's geophysical fluid dynamics lab at Princeton, attribute this to the increase of greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere. Greenhouse gases, such as nitrous oxides, carbon dioxide, methane and HFCs, trap the sun's energy and heat rather than releasing it back into space. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions will prevent further negative effects of global warming on natural ecosystems, coastal communities and wildlife.
  1. Flooding

    • Reducing emissions will help reduce the incidence and severity of flooding. According to the BBC, major floods that would normally happen once every century are now occurring every 10 to 20 years. Global warming is also causing the ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland to melt, resulting in an overall rise in sea level. Unless emissions are reduced, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicts that sea levels will rise between 0.18 and 0.59 meters by 2100. Some residents of islands, such as Tuvalu in the Pacific, have already been forced to leave due to increased flooding. Reducing emissions will help prevent the loss of other low-lying areas.

    Human Health

    • According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, global warming is likely to cause significant loss of life and have an adverse impact on human health. Unless greenhouse gas emissions are reduced, deaths related to hot weather will increase. Cardio-respiratory disease will also increase with high levels of ozone at ground level. The BBC reports that the number of incidents of skin cancer has quadrupled in the last 30 years. Reducing green house gas emissions could help reverse these trends.

    Wildlife

    • As the earth warms, habitats that are home to the planet's animals and plants will change. According to the BBC, if the temperature increases by more than 1.5 to 2.5 degrees Celsius, it is estimated that between 20 and 30 percent of animals and plant species will be threatened by extinction. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, humans can ensure that the earth's ecosytems remain stable and their inhabitants are not forced to rapidly adapt to new surroundings.
