DIY Weather Vane

Place a compact disc on top of the piece of corrugated cardboard. Trace a circle around it with the felt pen. Move the disc over and trace another circle beside the first. These pieces will make up the rear arrow on the weather vane.

Draw two triangles on the cardboard with the sides three inches long. These will be used to make the front arrow of the weather vane.

Cut out the cardboard circles and triangles with scissors.

Apply super glue to the side of the PVC pipe and press it against the side of the damp ruler. Allow the glue to set for about an hour to make sure a strong bond forms.

Place one triangle down on top of the end of the ruler and position it to form the point of the arrow. Attach it to the ruler with the staple gun. Turn the ruler over and staple the other triangle onto the ruler.

Place one cardboard circle over the other end of the ruler and staple it down with the staple gun. Turn the ruler weather vane over and staple the other cardboard circle onto the ruler to finish the rear vane. The larger surface area of the rear shape makes the weather vane always point in the direction from which the wind is blowing.

Slide a flat washer onto the roofing nail. Insert the nail into the PVC pipe and hammer the nail into the end of the broom handle to attach the weather vane to the pole. Do not hammer it down so tightly that the vane won't turn in the wind. The section of PVC pipe will pivot around the roofing nail as the wind blows against the weather vane.
