The Average Indoor Winter Air Temperature

There is no ideal indoor air temperature for everyone, since activity levels, clothing and personal preference all determine individual comfort. However, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers does have a general recommendation for optimal indoor air temperature in winter.
  1. Significance

    • As noted in "Impacts of Indoor Environments on Human Performance and Productivity," studies at Kansas State University determined the effect of indoor air temperature on performance in both workplace and school settings. Error rates and speed of work were quantifiable measures of progress. The findings have varied slightly, but the studies did discover that speed decreased and, at times, error frequency increased in uncomfortable conditions.

    Recommendation

    • The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers recommends that indoor winter air temperature be maintained between 68 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. For maximum comfort, the average humidity level should be maintained between 30 and 50 percent.

    Considerations

    • While personal preference, clothing and activity levels can all help determine an individual's comfort level, the recommended range allows for varying needs. It also allows individuals to remain in their comfort zones while avoiding the growth of mold, dust mites or bacteria at temperatures that venture beyond the recommended range. Also, if people are comfortable, they are less likely to be distracted by physical discomfort and can optimize performance at work or in school.
