Type of Plant Life in the Mojave Desert

According to the National Park Service, the Mojave desert is located mostly in southeastern California between Las Vegas, Nevada and Los Angeles, Calif. The desert encompasses mountains, canyons, mesas and playa lake beds. Its ecosystem is made up of many micro climates that support diverse plant life.
  1. Cacti and Succulents

    • Desert USA describes several kinds of succulents and spiny cactus that grow in the Mojave desert, including the abundant cholla cactus, barrel cactus and several varieties of yucca. Cacti and succulents survive by storing water inside thick stems or leaves. According to Blue Planet Biomes, the Joshua tree is an unusual yucca found nowhere else in the world; it can grow up to 40 feet tall and may live up to 200 years.

    Bushes

    • According to Blue Planet Biomes, the bushes that grow in the Mojave desert tend to be low-growing, brittle and covered with hairy leaves that minimize water loss. The common salt bush, or cattle spinach, is described as the dominant plant in the Mojave landscape. Other bushy plants include the creosote bush and the triangle-leaf bursage.

    Wildflowers

    • Over 250 kinds of wildflowers can bloom in the Mojave desert in spring if there is enough moisture present to support them. According to the National Park Service, this is by no means an annual event, but when there is ample rainfall, these annuals grow and bloom inside of a very short period of time, blanketing the desert floor. Wildflowers include the desert five-spot, desert paintbrush and the desert mariposa lily.
