How to Use Chicken Bones As Dinosaur Bones

Using chicken bones as dinosaur bones is a good way to excite and educate children about paleontology. Chicken bones can be used as an inexpensive way to allow kids to dig up their own dinosaur just like a real life paleontologist. A few everyday household items will make the world of the dinosaurs come to life in the minds of children.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect several chicken leg bones. Strip the bones of all meat, tendons and fat using fingers and a knife. Wash the bones with soap and water and dry them off with paper towels.

    • 2

Dig several 6-inch-deep holes 3 feet apart in soft soil or sand with a garden spade. Set a chicken bone in each of the holes and then fill the hole back in. Blend the area using a garden rake in a back and forth motion. Lightly sprinkle water over the area using a garden hose. Blend the soil until the sites where the holes were dug are not obvious.

    • 3

Give each person a paint brush and spoon. Draw a line in the soil with a stick around the area where the bones were buried and invite each individual to begin digging until the bones are discovered. People dig with the spoon and use the paintbrush to brush dirt off the bones.
