How to Graph the Square Root of X

The square root of x is a mathematical equation in which "x" is the number that results from multiplying a number with itself. For example, the square root of 16 is 4 because 4 multiplied by itself equals 16. By creating a simple two-column chart, you can obtain the "x" and "y" coordinates necessary to plot the points and connect the dots to create a visual representation of the square root of x.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a chart with two columns and label the left column "x" and the other column "y."

    • 2

List in sequential order, 1 through 10 down the left column.

    • 3

Solve for the value "y" by plugging the "x" values listed in Step 2 into the equation y = √x . For example, at the "x" value 1, the "y" value would equal 1. Continue to solve for "y" until the chart is filled out.

    • 4

Take the "x" and "y" coordinates in the chart and plot them on a graph with an "x" and "y" axis. The "x" coordinates run horizontally while "y" coordinates run vertically. Once you have accurately plotted each "x" and "y" coordinate pair, connect the dots to reveal the graph. The result should be an ascending curved line in Quadrant I.
